It turns out a different bank that I used to be with (Monzo) filed the Cifas marker on my record before closing my account a little while back. I did a DSAR check and the reason stated by the bank was "retaining wrongful credit". Around the same time of Monzo doing this, my monzo account was unknowingly being used as a "drop account", which means I've been sent stolen money and asked to send it to the recipient fraudster to "clean" the money. This was being done under the guise of being a small favor for a friend due to their inability to send money as their bank account was being closed. It was only around 300 total so no ill intentions of fraud were initially suspected. This is the explanation for the "retaining wrongful credit" Cifas filing reason. I am now in the process of contacting Monzo in the effort to remove the Cifas marker but seeing as I have no evidence of being a victim of fraud, such as chat transcripts, I can only pray that Monzo somehow believes my story. Any useful advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.(01-28-2023, 12:25 PM)wideputin Wrote:(01-22-2023, 03:36 AM)mothered Wrote: @wideputin, what was the outcome?Due to the closure of my bank account (cifas marker) I was unable to preform any refunds recently. The bank hasn't returned my money so its quite frustrating.
Can you speculate on what might have caused the CIFAS marker ? Have you done hundreds of refunds on that account ?

Because you took a while to respond and the fact that I was paranoid about being at risk of getting one myself i did some research. My research lines up exactly with what you have said, majority of the people i have seen online have been given their CIFAS markers as a result of some kind of involvement with money laundering as a money mule. Many of the people like yourself were tricked in to it which is a shame because that shit stays on your account for 6 years.

As for any help or advice for your current situation ive read that it is a good idea to speak to the police and get a police report to back up what you are saying to the bank. Aside from that I found the following subreddit that is dedicated to people in exactly your situation: https://www.reddit.com/r/CIFASMarkerAdvice/
It doesnt seem to be very active but you may find some useful info. Best of luck getting it removed.

The difficult thing is proving that.
