Hello, world. Delays and shitty internet notwithstanding, the minute of posting this thread exactly three years ago is when I wrote my first batch script that did absolutely nothing but print that, and when I started with forums. I didn't understand how or very much why the script did what it did, but I was captivated by it. Looking back, if you asked 12-, even 13-year-old me what I thought I would dedicate several thousands of hours to over the next few years, I would've had no clue what to say (ok, fine, I might've said Halo at the time), and then my first forum, HackCommunity, happened.

I found HC off of a google search and instantly aspired to understand and innovate with the developers I would call my first mentors, many of whom are still on the top posters board here on SL. I made that my goal, not caring how long it would take, and I started to learn. I learned everything I could about batch, tried learning Perl (failed the first few times), and learned everything I could understand - and some things I couldn't entirely - about Ruby. This all took place within a year, and I knew I found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I still had practically everything left to learn. I was overwhelmed by everything I didn't yet know, and I still am. When I was 14, I expanded even further and learned Python, started with web development, began to understand how low-level languages like C - and by extension the scripting languages that I used daily - really functioned. When I was 15, I started to lose the ability to list what languages and concepts I knew. Node, Go, Java, C#... I could go on. Without my résumé in front of me, I still can't list everything. This year, I've truly taken the plunge into the low-level classics like C, C++, and Assembly, as well as bleeding-edge languages like Rust.

To paraphrase a quote from my old camp's director, this place is nothing but a shell without the people. I really think that applies here, since I've viewed SL as another home - a big community with familiar people I can always talk to about anything (provided it isn't 3 AM in their timezone, but even that doesn't matter sometimes), a place where I can learn and hone my skills, and a place I can teach others and guide them down the same road (which is the best feeling in the goddamn world) - for the better part of my journey into this crazy, ever-evolving, always-expanding industry.

As a sign-off, I have a lot of people to thank - some of whom may never even see this thread - for being my friends, teachers, development partners, mentors, and inspirations throughout my career so far. @Oni, @Aeolian, @"Axi", @Jiggly, @Killpot,  @phyrrus9, @roger_smith, @Skullmeat, @"insidious15", @DarkMuse, @Master, @Bish0pQ, @bluedog.tar.gz, @RA1N, @Psycho_Coder, @chmod, @Ex094, @bitm0de, @Spirit, @Legolas, and anyone else from SL or HC that I've forgotten - thank you, each and every one of you, for helping me get this far in any way you did.

To anyone just starting out who needs advice on how to get into the field, I'll say what I've said to bored and disheartened students, to interviewers asking for advice for new coders, and to anyone else that asks: Never. Stop. Learning. Here's to another three, you guys are fucking awesome,

don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.
