Put simply, It's Identified when scanned at the collection point, as well as the description documented on the carrier's manifest.  When cross-checked, both records will pinpoint the package In question.

Moreover, a lot of major carriers place packages on conveyor belts at their depot, whereby weights, dimensions and photos (of very angle) are taken prior to placing them at their designated section awaiting delivery. This barely scratches the surface of how goods are handled- but gives you a general Idea of how It works.

This Is based on 30+ years of personal experience In the shipping/freight sector, and not just something I've Googled.

Keep me posted on this. From my understanding, I think it stands a good chance, for example - once the label has been bleached -> courier pickup, successful scan. gets to the sorting office, barcode has ran, not scannable and therefore final destination is unknown. For companies which take the liability for lost returns in transit - easy refund.
