I know usually AR's require an exchange upon delivery. But is there a way to receive the replacement and somehow convince the courier that you will ship the "broken" item yourself at a drop off location later on?

With AR, usually (really depends on the company) the company will send you the package and then charge for the item if they don't receive your broken item. it's easier to just ship to a drop address so you don't have to worry about sending replacement.
