Well, the entire theory of evolution and natural selection rests upon the belief that sometimes, random mutations cause changes that benefit the organism. Think about it, it makes sense. Why do people in hotter countries have darker skin?

Speciation is a good example of this. Let's say you have a group of rabbits. A natural occurrence separates the group into two or three different groups. The surroundings for each group are different, and so, after a few hundred years, they've changed, adapted, enough so that they cannot reproduce together any longer.

This has occurred and been observed in the real world.

If something bad comes of mutations, theoretically, that group with the bad genes should die out. Us humans are a strange bunch.
