I don't think it's stupidity, I think it's intentional.

You'd be surprised at the number of thickheads handling claims.

I've communicated with countless reps who struggled to absorb the most simplistic Information.

A little update about my eb attempt.  It seems like when an incompetent rep initially screws up your claim, and you then have them fix their mistake, I usually end up getting more than just my money back.  In this case I got a $100 store credit as well.  So all in all it turned out for my good.
