So  rather than go by the actual ipad weight i should maybe look up total box weight online? then find the closest match.

Correct.

You're claiming the entire contents (box & Item) was not received, so that's the weight that should be calculated with the wrong Item.

Order them at the same time and then tell them i only received the wrong item.

Tell them you received another Item to what was originally ordered.

Just one last question. Should i just file an automatic return or am i better involving chat?

Either way, you'll be asked to return the wrong Item, so It's your choice.
