It's a tough one because they've created It as such.

The equation Is pretty simple - If the OP doesn't receive his Item, they don't receive theirs. Whether they like It or not, that's where the claim currently stands.

I emailed them and explained that there was a mix up, I asked them to send back the incorrect item, they replied with this.

That sounds like a win. It seems like they're going to take the loss for the "misunderstanding" as they no longer have your property and already issued you a refund.

I would send a follow up for clarity but try not to seem to pleased. They are suspicious of what you did but they kinda screwed themselves by disposing of your property.

I would just ask again if they are in fact not able to return your property and apologize once more for the mishap.
