its weird because before they just manufacture you a new laptop and have to wait a week or two from china to get shipped. Now they want to refund to the retailer who sold the item and then for me to go and request the refund from them.

Have you checked their terms to see whether they've been amended to obtaining the refund from the retailer, as opposed to shipping another unit (as It was previously the case)?
