I think i'll try the boxing method and claim that the representative misheard me regarding having disposed of the item. I don't have access to dry ice so I will try with some packing tape of the same weight.

Carriers have packing tape at their depot and some also carry It with their delivery run, so It's consistent with the driver tampering with the package and using the tape as the replacement.
