Need Help with this SE #1
So I am trying to SE one relatively well known phone company regarding a phone catching fire bla bla bla battery leaking etc.

It came down to them organising RMA, so I was preparing to box them some time soon. But today their senior support rep stepped in and wants to have a call tomorrow re: the incident. I am not entirely sure what's the best way to go about it:

1) I could tell him that I still have the phone and that I'll be sending it back soon
2) I have the phone but the courier won't accept it as it has acid on it etc
3) I don't have the phone as I brought it to the disposal store/ threw away

I was tempted to go with the option (2) but then thought that they may request pictures. Option (3) may leave me without a very much desired phone. Should I go with option (1) then? What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

If you go with 1, you'll almost definitely have to find some pictures of the phone online and Photoshop it to look like there is acid on it, they'll also probably try and get you to include a piece of paper with the serial number written on it so be prepared for that. If you go with 2, you will need to Photoshop the image same as option 1 and they'll still probably try and deny you on the grounds that they need the phone, however if you nag them enough that now you're being left without a phone because it exploded etc... they may fulfill the RMA. The 3rd option is a gamble on whether or not it will work, though since your SE involves a battery acid/fire scenario they may end up believing that you did actually just throw the phone out.

Option 1 guarantees you a phone so long as you can successfully Photoshop a picture and as long as boxing goes well (they could ask you to file a police report after they get your empty box which would totally ruin this option). Option 2 depends again on Photoshop ability to convince them you have the phone + after that you need to convince them that the carrier won't actually take it. Option 3 is a total gamble on whether or not you get it, you'd be betting your odds on how nice/naive the Senior Support Rep is.

Def. don't go with number 3, your SE will fail. It would help if you could give out the company name, I have likely tried them before.
A friend is nothing but a known enemy.

If you know how to Photoshop and the boxing is successful you could go with option 1.

Option 2 requires a bit more skill in Photoshopping but is definitely doable, I would go with option one though.'
If you ask me that's the one with highest possibility of you succeeding. (Be aware t hat you might would have to file a police report afterwards. Since the box is empty)

Not quite, if OP has a good case and basic photoshop skills and document creation skills he can definitely have a solid argument. If op threatens to sue or even brings it up or anything close to that, and the company he is trying to SE is clearly liable, they will almost always go with the easier route which is a replacement or even exchange, but that will take much longer than doing any other steps,

In my opinion OP should just call and see what’s up, If he gets nervous or something he shouldn’t have even tried SEng them in the first place (no offense). You just have to be prepared for things as simple as these beforehand.

Agreed, go with the flow. For all you know, it might be an offer for an advanced replacement. Probably not but it may lend itself to a favourable opportunity outside of those 3 options, let us know how it goes.

Generally with our forum, I figured this went without saying. However, recent discussion has led me to believe otherwise. People are encouraged to read and follow our rules, especially those regarding illegal content. You have been warned - @Oni

Advising on the best course of action, Is premature at this stage.

We're (obviously) unaware of the nature of the call, so until that happens, It's simply not possible to provide conclusive assistance. Please reply when you receive correspondence.

Gotcha bois – many thanks for the advice! Received another email from this senior support guy, asking me to provide the detz for the servicing procedure which I did, meaning that I'll be going with option 1 after all.

I asked him whether it would be possible to get a cheeky AR but we'll see what he responds, might just end up boxing them.

On the similar note, there's another Co. that I am currently SEing, it got to the RMA stage but they wouldn't send it until they receive my device. Here, the problem is that the thing weights around 11kg, so I am not entirely sure what's the best way to go about boxing them.

Everyone in the SE community seems to be adamant of dry ice. But I've read somewhere that it extremely cold which makes me think that a box w/ 11 kg of it will be very cold and therefore bait, as it'll be obvious that there's ice inside. Also, I know it evaporates over time, would there be a stream of gas coming out of the box?

Would really appreciate some advice from Dry Ice experts or any other suggestions on material that could discreetly fill in 11kg of weight.

You could tape rocks to the inside of the box and fill the rest.
I've done that before, and it actually worked. I know it sounds a bit weird, but it's a possibility to keep in mind :)

Lol so taped the rocks to the bottom of the box and fill the rest with dry ice?
