Empty Box / Wrong Item Theory #1
So just a theory i've been thinking about but interested to hear discussion on it.

Looking at for example, a Nikon DSLR Camera , They just come in a folded paper (c4rdboard is spam?) box, no shrink film on them so not sealed. There's nothing to stop you walking into a retail store, or ordering online, buying it, and taking it home, returning with (in store....Wrong model , perhaps a £200 basic model?) and online, a block of wood or something weighing the right amount?

They could literally never prove it was you that switched it, and even better online, the weights would match (Thinking Amazon here as they now weigh everything)

Thoughts?

This is a classic Social Engineering technique, that has been employed since the beginning of time. It does work online, however a store would probably have cctv and be able to prove that the item was in the box when you purchased it.

This and also most stores will just have a display unit which you take to the counter for them to grab a freshly sealed unit from their warehouse or locker. Better chance doing it with a company like Amazon or Newegg.

Very true re cctv but not everything is plastic wrapped so guess they couldn't prove contents? Just a thought really

The camera will contain footage of the "box", not It's contents.

This Is a typical "wrong Item received" method. Whether the box/package Is sealed or otherwise, Is Immaterial. As I've mentioned countless times, simply replace It with a significantly cheaper Item that they stock (Inventory) and on request, return that.

Very true, I hadn't considered this.

Interesting so far, I think what you're saying is easiest as there's less hassle in doing it. There's always the likelihood that when you go to a store you'll be scrutinised more than distance selling. I think there's also the option to order something new, that you know comes in an unsealed box, and on delivery call them up and say "hey I got some used 1999 era camera, you've sent me someone's return!" and then you essential make it appear as though someone else has done the dirty on them, then just place said ancient product into the box, ship it back for a replacement, and when the replacement arrives just return as unwanted.

Hence the "wrong Item received" method.

Provided they stock It, any Item roughly around the same weight (If delivered) will suffice.

Update : Have been doing a bit more research, Curry's put a security seal on all their boxes in store, whether on the shelf or in their store stock room, so this wouldn't work with them.

I'll update this with more information as I get it.
