A massive DDOS attack against Dyn DNS #1
This was an impressive one, some notable victims: Github, Twitter, SaneBox, and Reddit. I am curious who the actual target was, while other sites ended up being collateral damage.

:'( Github is down, my life is in tatters

reddit survived though. Their website is working fine, so there is hope.

But really this happened at the worst time. i'm sitting in Comp Sci class trying to pull changes to a group project and Github goes down

Dyn claims that the attack originated "mostly" in eastern USA, although that seems unlikely. since their target was in that vicinity. This makes peercoin and other alternative DNS solutions much more attractive to people. Bruce Schneier offered this non-analysis:

“Probing” refers to a specially calibrated kind of attack, one that’s designed to take advantage of an individual website’s precise security weaknesses. “We don't know who is doing this, but it feels like a large nation state. China or Russia would be my first guesses,” Schneier wrote.

Hahahahahahahahah. Or any old troll with a swoll botnet on deck.

Could be another DDOS IOT attack, except this time by someone who knows better what they are doing. Like the one a little bit ago that reached 2tB/s in bandwith. Really wouldn't be surprised, IOT devices are notorious for being easy to hack.

Dyn infrastructure was attacked, but that does not mean the threat actors wanted to harm Dyn, the actual target could have been any of Dyn's customers.

Latest chatter indicates that apparently the attack involved Mirai botnet.

I wish that Facebook was part of the equation, or better still, Facebook alone.

Whilst there's no Impact on compromising credentials, depending on the nature of the DDoS and who Is affected, It can cause significant financial loss due to downtime.

Latest chatter indicates that apparently the attack involved Mirai botnet.

" So far Dyn has not been able to ascertain whether the attack is aimed at any specific customer. "We have no reason to believe it is at this point," said Dave Allen, the company's general counsel. The attack is "consistent with record-setting sized cyberattacks seen in the last few weeks," said Carl Herberger, vice president of security at security company Radware. A post on Hacker News first identified the attack and named the sites that were affected. Several sites, including Spotify and GitHub, took to Twitter Friday morning to post status updates once the social network was back online."
