A few moments ago, I decided on the 3 trippiest anime I've seen. I am not sure if I would recommend hallucinogens with any of these, as they are already challenging to follow.

1. Space Dandy

Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her bass guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. 3. Paprika

The only one I can really think of would be Desert Punk (Space Dandy would be the second but it's already listed). It's about a midget who runs around the desert kicking the shit out of guys and creeping on women.

It's not trippy in the sense that it looks like you're on a drug, but it's really weird. And agreed, one of the first anime I watched and it was quite good.

I read the manga to FLCL and it was amazing, really recommend the experience!

its not as emotionally grabbing as dusk maiden, but its still pretty good, and the art style puts it at ease a bit.
