Perhaps smaller a smaller story with all that's going on, but an interesting one - University Researchers have been modifying and experimenting with an enzyme that can break down plastics into pellets that can then be used in place of "raw materials". The French company, Carbios, uses this method to break down used/existing plastics for companies that need plastic for production. The idea is that items that would normally go to landfill can be turned into something akin to "raw materials" again. These items also don't have to be pure PET, they can be t-shrits with cotton mixed in too, making the usefulness much wider than some existing plastic recycling schemes.
Carbios aren't looking to become a large recycling entity, but to license their process to other companies like PepsiCo. This gives these large companies other means to gain their raw materials besides petrochemicals.
A clever solution which allows businesses to benefit as well.
