Do they know?

@mothered any idea?

In my experience, no. This could be possible, however, where a store is also the manufacture (eg Apple) but depends whether they record SNs and connect store inventories with warranty registrations etc.

From past experience in big box stores, most floor models are registered as such with the manufacturer and the seller - some even come preprogrammed slightly differently from production which make them easier to indentify, e.g. TVs. It really depends on what the item is and how much loss prevention and the manufacturer cares about it not being stolen. Products with a limited registration time after purchase (when it says like 30 or 90 days for warranty sign up) and additional security features will generally be tracked by sale and updated in near-real time or at least daily. If it comes with registration instructions like send by mail with receipt or you only have to enter the SN and no QR code or security features, it's likely not tracked as comprehensively and would be easier to lie about purchase dates etc.

Thats some comprehensive shit right there. My rule of thumb was if it is not something that needs to connect to the internet or an app / website to function then it will be much less likely to be tracked for purchase date.

If no one has purchased the product, It'll be sitting at the store, so It's assumed you're the Initial buyer, but It's very likely the POP will be requested.

The product im looking at has the SN, with barcode next to it on the outside of the box on a sticker. The purchase barcode is different on a separate part off the sticker.

They said there’s no way to check date of purchase, but can check if stolen with SN

Dyson is pretty high value. If they're saying they can't check date of purchase but it has an SN barcode, it's probably a simpler system but they still have a database of what units have been sold. Likely that the cashier will scan UPC and SN barcodes and the latter is reported, but not transaction details.
