I cannot see how It can possibly work:
  • They've sent a return label
  • They're obviously expecting the return to process the claim
  • An empty envelope was sent Instead of the expected product
  • They've received It and evidently, checked It - only to find some garbage as the return

How on earth has the method succeeded for others? They're either BS'ing, or the company Is still living In the stone age.

I think some companies issued refund on delivery of return automatically. But this shit gets patched real fast

Heard of ftid (empty letter) being called out in Europe too.

The retailer said they received an empty letter which was flagged by the carrier. They stated that it did not contain the returned items and due to the SIZE of the letter it never could have never contained those items claim to have been returned.

The size of the letter is key here. With the above example dry ice could have worked in theory if the weight matched when it was scanned at the depot.

Empty letter or ftid can work but the main part is luck, professionalism of your target company and your persistence/SE skills. It depends on the processes in place in the return department, how well they document returns and how is the communication between CS & returns.

In other words, refund on scan.

You'd think they'd use common sense and take action when the return Is received.

I know. It seemed like a long shot to me too, but username KingDead said it worked, and he seems legit. Maybe it's just in the US. Some companies still do the whole refund on first scan thing, so I thought maybe they did that. But... apparently not. I have proof of sending something, so I am trying to dispute it. xD

This does make more sense, but they would have checked the contents regardless. The return was not weighed, so I can claim there a box with it. I will see if I can maybe succeed this way. Doubtful, but at this stage I think it's at least worth trying.

I'm not doubting that It worked at some point.

I just can't fathom how stupid and naive some companies are to approve claims under those circumstances.

I can't fathom that level of stupidity either. But there is stupidity, then there is policy and SOPs. Sometimes companies have a stupid way of doing things, which can be taken advantage of. I would actually like to know how tf this works in the US and not in Europe.

Think it is more luck and wanting to please/believe the customer regardless of how unlikely the situation is.
Of course that can be seen as stupidity but it is also the same vulnerability why Amazon become the most popular target for refunds.
If you can't make your targets believers, SE'ing is next to impossible.

I totally agree, but as a very logical Individual myself, I don't understand how such stupidity Is maintained consistently by the company's employees.

If It were a few SE's here and there, yes, It's understandable that luck may play a role with Its success.

However, we're talking about an ongoing series of events for months on end - Impossible to be lucky on each and every occasion.

Not all these agents are going to be as reasonable as you are, and sometimes their policies and procedures aren't as carefully considered either. That's exactly why we can sometimes take advantage of this and have successful SEs.

I am going to pursue it anyway. I was surprised it failed so definitely in the first place, the order was under a different name and I used a different payment method. There is still a slight chance I might succeed. I got another email and the case is being escalated. I have nothing to lose.
