Lets say i buy a Switch lite, instore, from Curry's or even better; CEX (WeBuy) UK. Could i just get a non working one from eBay and switch the Serial no. stickers around and return it for a refund ?

I haven't seen a switch serial number and how its displayed but if it's printed on the console no chance if its a sticker you will have to use the exact sticker nintendo uses and if it's in warranty or any other info that's on the sticker
Your best chance is warranty claiming off a company and using phtoshop to Shop the s/n on it (its not impossible you will have to be in detail about what was on the console to match it

Also I'm sure Cex input the S/n on their system or is it the modal number?

I am aware of the standard S/N method but i was thinking of trying an instore method and using a real item.

The Nintendo switch was just and example I'm thinking anything that has a serial sticker that i can just swap round and return the broken item with the S/N sticker from the one i bought from them.

Oh yeah I get what you mean mate you just have to make sure the sticker is exact placement is all an no signs of tampering
