I don't doubt that the retailer you are trying to SE keeps some record of the SN of the item sent to you.

They certainly do, namely for ownership and warranty purposes.

Correct, they do have the capacity to do so.

I did end up sending the SN, I didn't send a fake one just so I could avoid any complications along the way, worst case they lock the watch and i get my money back. The Team member told me the reason they asked for the SN is to simply verify with apple that the apple watch has not been activated which it has not. Hopefully apple do not lock the watch.

It's not often that Apple takes action under circumstances similar to yours. If It was Oculus, there'd certainly be cause for concern.

If they don't approve It, you can return the replacement for a refund.

If the parcel does happen to be delivered please reject delivery and it will come back to us.
However we cannot process a refund until we recieve the original box back fom you.
I have attached a return consignment note that will send the box back to us.”
This was the reply i received.

We have sent out a new Apple Watch.
Can you please send us back the empty box.
Once we have recieved this we will issue you a new receipt.
