Joke aside, the good old barcode switcharoo works well provided you select the right self checkout attendant.
The problem is i live in a small city and the nearest ikea shop here is 70km away
but im still interested for the next time i’ll hit up the store
I just gotta scan similar cheap item and put the right one on the cart, right?

If you want to do it neatly, get the barcode of the cheaper product in advance, print it, apply double sided tape on it, then go to the store and tape it on top of the one from the item you’d like to buy.

I guarantee the attendant won’t know the difference between a $299 Dåkkbutt and a $999 Fökit closet.

Depending on the model you could get the barcode online but I found it’s always better to go in store and take a picture, prepare, then come back later. This way you can learn about the store, the employees, best time of the day to go etc…

Last time I went I wore an IKEA shirt and a yellow vest that I bought on eBay, got my stuff and simply went through the cash registers looking like I was bringing the stuff to a customer. It’s easy and it works well for small items.

update: today I had day off and went to ikea store to see if there were circumstances to follow the method of @futterbuckz
and honestly it’s seems pretty easy, the automatic cashier agents don’t care about anything and don’t even lookin at customer screens, they just be standing there for support and nobody checking receipts
so next weekend i’ll go back to proceed with the SE

I took couple pics of items worth 20/30€ to print and then switch at the store.
can you confirm i just need to cut only the part of the bar code or all the paper stripe.

That’s correct. Make sure the size is proportional to the barcode you’ll be taping yours over.

Ideally you would only use barcodes from regular (non seasonal) items that come in cardboard boxes, and ideally the shape/number of boxes would resemble the ones from the item you’re SEing — i.e. don’t try to pull a sofa with a lamp barcode.

Last advice: be ready to quickly and discretely rip off your makeshift barcode in case you get caught. Some stores have cameras over the cash registers, be aware of that too. Exit quickly after paying. Refrain from coming back for a month or two.
