I just received an iphone 13 that I bought from Apple direct. I was wondering what the best methods of SE'ing a refund would be.

The package was left at my front door and was not signed for or handed to anyone, it was just sitting there. It seems DNA would be the obvious method here but I really would not like to file a police report as I can't risk police involvement or anyone that I live with finding out. My town is very small and I have heard officers can sometimes come to residences to investigate package theft or mail fraud.

The only other method I've considered is a disposed of faulty item method by staging a battery leak. I just successfully did this SE on a laptop with a different retailer so I'd be confident I could get it to work here. I also don't have the tools or equipment for sealed box method atm.

I think I read somewhere on here someone did a successful staging job for an iPhone. You've got the experience, go for it.

Do note that Apple may ask you to deal with the carrier, but remain adamant that they're responsible for handling your claim.

As of late, Apple opens and Inspects goods when using the sealed box method, particularly with phones.

Think outside the box.

In kevin mitnicks book the art of deception you have a character named "Dee" where innocuous information isnt so harmless. Try doing some reconnaissance and call them, pose as an employee if you have too, and learn about their return policy, ask for some stores, learn the policy, etc,etc. Find out who has what authority. Its shit like this that will ultimately give rise to something that may not be so common.
