Making a custom cooling system for my car - phyrrus9 - 07-23-2018

So, my neighbor gave me some 2 speed fan that came out of god knows what 1990s car, and I decided its time I get rid of that POS mechanical one.

As you can see, its sort of just frankensteined in there, but it works.

Well, I was thinking, why would I run this thing on switches when I can just make myself a temperature sensing circuit and tune it to the temp I want it to go full blast on? What I came up with is this:

Don't worry, I can't read my hand writing either. Basically I'm using an NTC that I'll tape to the lower rad hose to drive the voltage on a p-FET low and control a SPDT relay with it. I'll wire the source for the entire circuit to a SPST relay from the car's ignition. If everything goes well, the low speed will kick on when I start the car, and then the high speed will kick on somewhere between 30C and 45C. I used a 20k RV so that I could fine tune it to what works best. The voltage graph out of the first stage (into the FET) looks like this, if you're interested.

So, any thoughts?

Sounds like a really fun project to jump into but don't cars have built in cooling systems?

Indeed they do. It consists of the water, radiator, oil, and fans. It's the last component im changing.

Interesting approach to that. I know a friend of mine recently replaced his radiator and fan system on his RX8 with a custom thing we had been working on for a few weeks. Good luck with the car my dude.

Speaking of that, what's the current run down on your car since I imagine its changed a good bit since last time I saw anything about it.

It's largely the same. I've been spending all of my time working or with my family, and so aside from going to electric fans the only change has been carbon fiber brakes.

Pretty much what I learned from watching you was “don’t try this at home” and then test wires on your tongue.

Missed the catching fire, but that seems to happen too often with you. Tongue

I had the power disconnected for that. I was saying don't strip wires with your teeth. You have no idea how many times one of the strands has broken off and lodged itself in my gums.

Carbon fiber brakes? Doesn't sound like a Honda for sure.

They're more common than you think. The whole point is to reduce angular mass and keep consistent friction coefficients under high temperatures. Ceramics help with this quite a bit, but carbon/graphite does a better job. And no, it is not a Honda, though your bashing of Honda seems to show that you've never done anything aside from possibly bolt ons.

I drive a Honda a lot myself, I just said Honda because most people expect a Honda to be a run-of-the-mill car, and I was implying that you must not drive a Honda. I'm aware that ceramic and carbon brakes are much better for braking, but they're commonly used by enthusiasts, rather than the average joe.
