NY has a lot of place to visit, NYC has some cool places, If you go near Troy stop off at Bella Napoli bakery for the best damn baked goods ever and coffee that will burn your mouth for a week and come night time Troy becomes a haven for Heavy Metal. Never go anywhere near Schnectady, you will find it far more dangerous than any ghetto of NYC. Albany has some cool historical stuff and if you head into the catskills, there are some nice indian casinos.

I'm not from the USA, so I'm not entirely sure, but Central Park seems nice too (from the people I know have been there).

Depends on what you like. The Highline, Chelsea Market, free up-close view of the Statue of Liberty on the Staten Island Ferry....

I am from New York City, and I know lots of places that you would hopefully enjoy, however in your post you did not specify a specific activity or category, so I will list a couple for a few categories that I can think of, hope it helps
:Museums
- Metropolitan Museum of Art (if you love art, you MUST go to this museum, it is absolutely incredible and has every art era imaginable)
- Frick Collection (if you like "fancier" artwork and atmosphere, you should visit this gallery, they have a gorgeous indoor fountain and sitting area)
- American Museum of Natural History (if you are into fossils, dinosaurs, and that type of thing, this is definitely a museum you should visit)
- Morgan Library and Museum (if you appreciate beautiful architecture, this is the place for you, this place is stunning)
Parks
- Central Park (of course, a must go, however if you want to avoid huge tourist groups, I recommend visiting at earlier hours)
- Prospect Park (if you happen to be in the Brooklyn area, I would definitely recommend going to this park, it is a much more relaxed environment than Central Park)
- Brooklyn Botanical Garden (this is not necessarily a park, however, I was unsure of where else to place this, again, if you are in the Brooklyn area, I recommend this place, it has beautiful scenery)
Shopping
- SoHo (if you enjoy luxurious articles and designer brands, SoHo has a variety of upscale boutiques)
- Macy's at Herald Square (being one of the largest stores in the entire world, this Macy's has over ten floors, and from what I have heard, but don't take my word for it, tourists get a discount)
- 5th Avenue (again, a must go for tourists, however, is not my favorite place, extremely noisy and crowded, all of the iconic stores are located here)
Food
- Pizza (this is obviously not the name of a restaurant haha
, but just simply a suggestion, because everyone wants to try the famous "New York pizza," if you want legitimately good pizza for a really decent price, find a simple pizzeria, and it will be much better than some restaurant, as per my experience)- Dekalb Market Hall (if you are in Brooklyn, this is definitely the place you should stop to eat at, they offer everything from Mexican to donuts to pierogis, your options will not be limited)
- Chelsea Market (again, basically a mall for food, you have countless options including everything from sushi to gourmet pastries)
General Tips that a New Yorker can give
- Do not visit the Empire State Building, the long lines and fifty-plus dollar fee is not worth it.
- Do not take taxis, they are extremely pricey, and you will most likely get stuck in traffic for an hour.
- Do not go on bus tours, they are extremely boring, and surprisingly expensive.
- Do not limit yourself to Manhattan, there are so many other places to visit within Brooklyn, Queens, and so on.
- Take the subway , the subway is 2.75 per way, and is far faster than any other means of transportation
