Laptops In Checked Bags Might Get Banned - Ecks - 10-20-2017

Laptops could be banned from checked baggage on planes due to a fire risk under a proposal being recommended by an international air safety panel. According to a report, an overheating laptop battery could cause a significant fire in a cargo hold that fire fighting equipment aboard the plane would not be able to extinguish. That could "lead to the loss of the aircraft," according to the proposal. The ban will be considered by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations organization, at its meeting this month. Even if the organization endorses the proposal from its Dangerous Goods Panel, which is making the recommendation, it would be up to regulators in individual nations to pass rules to enforce it. The U.S. FAA has no comment on the proposal. But it is represented on the panel that is supporting the ban, and its research on the risk of fires from laptops is included in the proposal.

Now that I made the post, I call this more security theater, sure certain types of batteries do not do well at high altitudes and are prone to exploding when slammed around (Like they do to your luggage), but this is all pure bullshit and more government overreach.

So a laptop in the cargo hold? There is already alot of regulation in place as to the storage and transport of lithium ion batteries. As someone who does repairs on laptops, I have seen first hand how much abuse consumer units take. They simply cannot know what state they are in. Its a better safe than sorry attitude.

Well, this really sucks, I would want to be on my laptop during the long flight. I understand though, like @Skullmeat said, you never know the condition of the battery.

You can. The post is referring to checked baggage, which is the baggage that you do not carry on the plane yourself.

Yes, I know that, what I mean is, I would want to be able to get on my laptop during the flight.

Hmm. To me that sounds like exactly what you just said. But we're obviously just misunderstanding each other. I thought you were saying you want to be able to have your laptop on long flights and not have them banned, and I am saying that is not the issue.

They do not want it under the plane, if you bring them they want you to bring them on the flight. After the attempt to bomb a plane via a lap top look a like bomb they are surely wanting to X-ray them

I haven't traveled for many years, but wouldn't you put the lappy In the overhead luggage compartment of where you're seated?
