Marcus Hutchins, AKA MalwareTech, Has Been Arrested - Ecks - 08-03-2017 A security researcher who in May stopped an outbreak of the WannaCry ransomware has been arrested and detained after attending the Def Con conference in Las Vegas. Marcus Hutchins, 23, a British national, was arrested at Las Vegas airport on Wednesday by US Marshals, several close friends confirmed. A friend told ZDNet/Motherboard that he was "was pulled by Marshals at the lounge" after clearing security. He was briefly detained in a federal facility in Nevada until he was moved. "We went to see him this morning and we had already been moved," said the friend. Hutchins is now understood to be in custody at an FBI field office in the state. Motherboard first broke the story on Thursday. Update: A Motherboard reporter tweets, "Here's the indictment accusing @MalwareTechBlog of running the Kronos banking malware." Update 2: New DOJ statement: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3912820-MAN-CHARGED-for-HIS-ROLE-in-CREATING-the-KRONOS.html Gregory J. Haanstad, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced that on July 11, 2017, following a two-year long investigation, a federal grand jury returned a six-count indictment against Marcus Hutchins, also known as "Malwaretech," for his role in creating and distributing the Kronos banking Trojan. And who knows what else he's been up to that either the authorities don't know about, or neglect to disclose at this point. I'll be keeping an eye on this as news to comes to hand. I find it strange that he stopped WannaCry, but then had banking malware. Everyone single "hacker" is grey hat. Everyone conforms to their own morals and those morals never will align perfectly with each others. This is how humanity works. People have tried to conform morals via religion or pushing social norms but it won't work and it brings out extremity. While I don't agree with what he did, it was done nonetheless and he created the malware and exploited the issue(s). Instead of deciding if it was right or wrong, we should move forward and squash the bugs and the kinks. So going back to my original statement, I don't really think it matters if it was right or wrong. There was an issue, it was exploitable, and we should fix it. He chose to go against what was socially unacceptable according to higher powers and now he will face the consequences. It is what it is. |
