Monitoring Network Traffic - zenTHEgreat - 03-15-2017
Ok, this could be a dumb question as I am new to this:
Are there any tools out there that can accurately monitor your network traffic? (Something that tells you what types of packets are coming in and out and from who)
I know you can do this with Wireshark but I want a tool or a way to view all incoming and outgoing network traffic within a private/public network that can show mac, ip, or any other form off indication from the terminal sending these packets. Any suggestions or guides about these tools and what OS you use along with it would be greatly appreciated as I'm still a novice to networking but I'm anxious to learn more.

Wireshark is capable of those things you just listed. You can also use Fiddler, but that's more to view traffic on your own network instead of also other networks/pc's.
Usually there's a source and destination MAC-address as well as IP-address.

Yeah you can use wireshark for Monitoring the network Traffic. you can even use tool like Intercepter-NG in your Linux distro. But wireshark is available for cross platform so it's worth to use it.

Wireshark only monitors whats going in and out of your machine. There are ways around that, like preforming a Man in the Middle Attack.

Google and Youtube are usually your friend. I believe there are some tutorials here as well.
