Game Maker Studio Help! - 0M4R - 01-05-2017

So this is an issue i have been experiencing and would like people with knowledge in game maker to help.

The issue is that on my main menu i can click enter to choose an option. So in this instance it is 'New Game', so once i click 'New Game', the game will ask if i want to overwrite the current saved game and will allow me to choose yes or no. The yes or no options are also selected with clicking enter. However, if i click enter on the main menu for to choose 'New Game', the key press of enter somehow carries onto the second menu, therefore, automatically choosing 'Yes' as this is the first option. The second menu is an overlay style menu where it is drawn over the main menu (see figure 1). I have used an if statement "if (keyboard_check_pressed(vk_enter))" to check when the enter key is pressed and i have done this for both the menus.

I was wondering whether there is any way to abolish the enter key action right after the first menu item has been chosen, then allow the user to still use the enter key to select something else on the second overlay menu.

That is an issue, but I do not know Game Maker Studio, so can not help.
