I was surprised how easy it is to make one. Does this fry the hard drive as well? Than it could be pretty usefull. If the feds would come in to bust your door in, it would be a quick way to corrupt your data.

Possibly? Not sure but I think it would depend on if there is overload protection for the hardrive. I'm sure this is regular just in case your computer was plugged in and there was a power surge. Will need confirmation however.

I should check it out but I don't have a system to try it out on. Or at least not a system I can miss.

I believe that in most cases (modern computers) only the motherboard would be rendered useless but other components remain in tact from the tests I have currently seen on the internet; So it may not be the best solution in such a situation.
Nice share by the way! Quite an interesting concept, I saw some company online selling these for $50 a piece, what a rip off.
This will surely help some.

The mobo would be dead and gone for sure, and with that kind of voltage I wouldn't trust the CPU or memory (maybe even the graphics card; there goes half your budget). Drives connected via IDE would be suspect, but SATA and M.2 drives should be fine.
