#MalwareSec - "How To" - Account Security - ✧Sirius Paradox✧ - 03-14-2013

In order to make Creative Gaming a safe place, account security is a must. We have been breached before because a member of staff had their account stolen. So hopefully, this guide will provide a few hints and tips to keep your account secure and away from people who could breach it.
  • Use A Strong Password
Surely in this day and age, people would have moved on from making their password "Password", "Pizza" and various other easy to guess words. Sadly, it hasn't people still do it. Using a real word as your password is one of the biggest mistakes you could probably use when securing your account. Common passwords like the above are on every password list/combo list which are available to anybody. So what you need to do, is make a secure password.

    What is a secure password?
A secure password is a string of upper case and lowercase text as well as numbers and symbols and normally around 8-10 characters. The whole point of a secure password is so it's not easy to guess. Generally, you want a different secure password on every account that you own so if one of your accounts gets breached, your whole network of accounts would be safe.

  • Avoid Suspicious Links
Phishing is one of the more common ways of breaching someone’s information as nowadays Phishing websites are pretty easy to set up. Basically, a Phishing website is a website that will look exactly the same as the one you are trying to get on (i.e. Creative Gaming), but the only difference would be the domain will look different. Lets be honest, who checks the domain when logging in to something? I can put money on the fact very few of you do.

    Examples of Phishing Domains:
    http://creativegaming.example.net
    http://creativegaming.domainhere.net

Notice how the above are just sub-domains and not an actual domain. Someone just glancing at this would see "Creative Gaming" and presume that it's genuine, when in fact, as soon as they log in to what they think is the website, the website owner now has their details. So be very careful and ensure you aren't too clumsy with this.

  • Keep Your Browser Up To Date:
Generally your browser is updated to fix bugs and possible security vulnerabilities. So please keep it updated, below I've added links to the best browsers to use in my opinion. The two below also have plugins available for key scrambling and pop up blockers.

    Google Chrome: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/
    Fire Fox: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

  • Keep Your Antivirus Up To Date:
This one, I honestly can't stress enough. You MUST keep your antivirus up to date and scanning regularly. This is one of the only ways your computer will actually pick up an infection. Yes, some viruses have been crypted to stop them being picked up from antiviruses, but crypted stubs don't last forever! Nowadays, really young kids are spreading infections. Now, this is actually quite a good thing because most little kids don't have enough money to buy a really good crypter, forcing them to buy a cheap one that more people go for. This brings the length that the stub/virus will be FUD (fully undetectable) for down. Which means your antivirus will pick it up pretty quickly.

In my computer based career, I've tried quite a few antiviruses and I'll give you a list below of good ones to use, that I have used personally.

    AVG: http://free.avg.com/gb-en/free-antivirus-download
-Currently, on my desktop I'm using "AVG Internet Security 2013" which is the paid edition of AVG. I would quite happily inform others to buy this as it has done the job perfectly for the last year or two that I've had it. AVG FREE is still perfectly good to use, except you don't get the extras which can be found in an easy to read graph in the link above.

    kaspersky: http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/internet-security-trial
-On my laptop, I'm using "Kaspersky PURE 3.0" similar to the above, I'm using the paid edition of Kaspersky. In the time that I have had this laptop, and used it daily I've had no problems. Kaspersky also lets me manage the protection for my parents laptops and my brothers desktop PC, from my laptop in my bedroom. This is a fantastic addition and one of my favorite points about using it. So instead of telling them all to back things up and scan regularly, I can basically control it from my own bedroom with literally, a touch of a button. I don't think they have a 100% free version, but you can always download the trial and get a serial from somewhere.

    MalwareBytes Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
-Alongside both AVG + Kaspersky on my devices, I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO protecting my computer from unwanted Malware and programs. I've used Malwarebytes for a long time and have had no problems what so ever. The things I really like about this are:

    1) They have a 100% free version
    2) You can password protect certain settings
    3) It's very fast
    4) Very thorough when scanning

So I'd highly recommend to all of you getting either AVG or Kaspersky with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware running alongside them for extra security. I highly wouldn't recommend running both AVG/Kaspersky alongside each other as they may conflict and make themselves redundant.

This thread will be updated regularly, so please stay tuned.

I have a few AVG 2013/Malwarebytes PRO serial keys, that were legitimately obtained, but I need Chris's permission before I can give them to members onsite.

Personally, if it's just you that is going to use it, I'd highly recommend getting AVG 2013.
