What happened to IRC? - PLX-2M - 04-21-2016

I have noticed sinister.li does not promote its own IRC channel, just Skype and Discord. I understand you cannot do voice comms on IRC, but for pure text chat IRC used to be primary method for many years. Is IRC dying? Am I just too old school? Anyone here still luring IRC?

IRC is still alive and well, I and many others still use it, but if there is newer technologies that offer greater functionality, why stick around IRC, for the "nostalgia?" There's no particular reason, you see. Discord, for instance, offers all the features of IRC and then some. It's just obsolescence, it's not anything about IRC itself other than it has simply grown past its prime.

OK, I get understand. What is more popular now - Skype or Discord?

Discord. People are in the Skype, but it's basically a backup. I do recommend joining it still.

The hype of Discord will be gone within a few months and then everyone is back to Skype.
And oh, everyone I know is using Skype, Jabber or XMPP.

Oh, and I've pushed IRC several times in the past. People just didn't bother logging in. We've had much better luck with Discord and Skype (which is sad). Maybe IRC is becoming more obsolete, but I still use it.

You may be correct.

Probably so, but It's still very early to tell.

Almost everything (that's successful In the beginning), Is considered as a hype. And some of which make It to bigger and better things thereafter. For Instance, look at Facebook. Who'd ever thought that they could compete against Myspace at the time. The results now speak for themselves.
