Anyone that has experience with VIA processors? - Bish0pQ - 03-07-2016

So a few weeks back I bought a small system, it was running Windows xp server. Anyway, I tried a various amount of linux distro's and they did not work.

The purpose of the PC is having a fileserver for personal use since the settings aren't great.

I'm not home now so I don't know the exact specs but it has:

- 512 MB RAM (DDR3)
- 512 MB SSD (Didn't even know they existed this small)
- Motherboard (unkown)
- Processor : VIA (unkown)

My question to you guys is, have you worked with a VIA processor before and if yes, what distro's can run on it do you think?

Does this support VIA processors? Because I tried the normal debian image and it didn't work.

You can try it. There's not much information I'm dealing with. Model number of your processor is unknown.

You may want to try some lightweight distrobution such as Slackware or Arch Linux, due to the low-end specifications and I'm not even sure if that'll even work. In worst case, you may have to use some older version of Windows on it and install an FTP-server.

VIA tends to create ARM based processors, however there is a possibility that you will be running one of VIA's x86 chips. What is the machine?

They still make VIA processors? Ive never seen one.

Just because you've never seen one doesn't mean they don't make them.

I'm sure they exist, its just that they are relatively uncommon, so I was surprised the OP has one.

The way you framed your question led me to believe otherwise. Thanks for clarifying.
