Block Ads On Your Skype Client - pvnk - 02-15-2016

I actually found Skype ads after an update to the client and found out that I really hated my life for pressing the update button and so I went out to remove the ads from my Skype client.

*Warning* You may lose access to your Skype Home feed, but if you're using your Skype Home feed, you should just kill yourself.

Go to your Control Panel. This tutorial is based off of Windows OS so if you have a Mac, good luck with your overpriced POS that no one on technology forums cares about.

Then head on over to your Network/Internet directory.

Click on Internet Options and go to the Security tab.

Click on Restricted Sites.

See the Sites button? Click on it. That's how we're going to add the Skypes ad domain to the blacklist.

Now...

Add these two lines.

Code:
apps.skype.com g.msn.com

--

Now you're ad fucking free.

Proof ~

...and you can remove the ad placeholder (which I have not for the sake of this tutorial), by changing the config file in your Skype's folder.

Change Advert Placeholder's value to 0. (For false, duh.)

Very nice! Thanks for the share. I don't use skype anymore, but this sounds like a good idea. However, I do have a question. Was Skype working after this? Were you able to send messages or did they remain greyed out leading to never actually sending? Recently I installed a telemetry blocker and it added your sites to my hosts file and Skype would not allow me to send messages. I removed the sites you said to add and I was able to send messages again.

Please let me know.

I'm pretty sure this works the same as adding the publicity servers to your hosts file in order for them not to get resolved.

On linux you could try adding those addresses (
127.0.0.1 apps.skype.com
127.0.0.1 g.msn.com
) to your / etc/ hosts file and it should probably work.

Didn't try though.
