SSH (Secure Shell) Program? - Generalpiggle - 01-12-2016
Hey, I'm currently looking at getting a SSH program such as PuTTY or Cygwin and I was wondering would one of these be sufficient or should I get a different program?

PuTTy is perfect for SSHing into systems and SSH tunnelling, I've no experience with cygwin so can't say.

"Cygwin" is not an "SSH Program" for starters. It's a nix like environment for windows that contains a bunch of utils - although very likely including an SSH client. And if not can be easily installed as a package im sure. It will be a command line based so no pretty editor.
If you just want an SSH client. Putty is fine. If you want to learn something, get a little command line experience, install cygwin and use the ssh client.

I'm actually getting linux on my old laptop soon as soon as I back up some stuff my family shoved on it.

You can always just install Linux in a virtual machine and enjoy all the benefits of Linux on your main Windows computer.

Nope! doesn't work. One of the greatest benefits of using Linux is not having to use Windows
So you don't get all the benefits of linux by using in a VM in Windows...

What makes Linux great is 1 part the tools (including GNU), 1 part the kernel (Unix, POSIX and various Linux-spesific extensions like epoll), and 1 part freedom (from Windows). A VM gives you 2/3.
I'm not a purist. Some people want or need Windows, for one reason or another. I run Linux on all my computers (ditched Windows completely when Steam entered beta on Linux), and only occasionally fire up a Windows VM when Wine fails me, but I realize my way is not for everyone.
