Religion? - Oni - 10-26-2015

Believe in a religion? Don't? Your reasoning?

RE: Religion? - zorrophreak - 10-26-2015

Religion is a very shady area for me because I'm not strict in any religion. I tend to lean Methodist Christian, but I think I take a lot of buddhist and new-age non religious but spiritual stuff.

So Oni, whats your religion?

RE: Religion? - Jiggly - 10-26-2015

Uncertain. Part of me is Christian and the other part feels that there is nothing, and the strongest part believes there is something, but what that is, I don't yet know.

I believe in science (the truth), not religion (the false).

I won't get into this thread too much but here are my thoughts.

Religion was created to answer questions in the days that our technology wasn't able to.

Religion is outdated, just like Windows XP. Users continue using it, but there are more options for them that may better themselves in the future.

All major religions will be forgotten; just like the ones before them.

Religion is odd for me. It is what my country was founded on, and what made it what it was (England) and it is notable that as religion has declined so have morals and that is why I like religion. It provides strong morals that I think every one should follow for a peaceful society. Obviously talking about Christianity here. I'm not practicing in any way since I can not bring my self to think there is a higher power, but I'm open to the concept of it. But if people ask, I just say I'm agnostic even though I follow many Christian morals.

I also dislike the fact that Atheism in this country seems to have a vendetta against Christianity, but Islam appears to get a free pass on a lot of things. I don't want this to become an Islamic state, I don't want Islam to have any power here. This has always been a Christian country (kinda, but mostly I guess) and it would sadden me to see what it was destroyed more than it already has.

Are you telling me there aren't other people that feel the need to share the word?

I've grown up a christian, although I haven't gone to church in months. Starting to rethink life because of all that what I have seen and read on the internet. Although it's really hard to let go of something you have already believed in since you were a child.

Why don't you share your thought too. Do you believe in religion?

And what are these Christian morals? Are these morals that I otherwise, as a member of society, would not believe in?

If you think the world has become less civilized and our morals have declined in the modern age as a result of more skepticism in religious matters, then I think it would do you well to travel back into history, when religion was a way of life, and lean how society operated. Less than 400 years ago we were burning people we suspected of being witches. Even to this day, people are vehemently opposed to giving a group of individuals basic human rights and respect, mostly due to religion, not the lack of it.

As for me, I am not a religious person. I don't directly follow any religious dogma, nor do I associate with any organized religion. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean I'm not spiritual. In fact, I'm still doing some of my own soul-searching and slowly discovering what I believe and don't believe in, and what makes sense, and what doesn't.

Mmm yea you brought up the exact problem I have with my point. If you don't believe in a God, then there is little to no reason to follow them. If you don't think you wont be judged, why bother. And you don't have to to be religious to follow them. As I said, I'm not but I still think they are a very good basis for society. Most people follow them already.

I'm not talking about skepticism. What I'm getting at is with out any consequence other than the immediate people will do as they please. Even hard libertarians know that allowing people total freedom is too far. Also, I don't think the burning of "witches" was purely down to religion. More down to stupidity of people I would say. What human rights are you talking about?

I know I didn't address the main point of the post, what are these morals. Because tbh idk, other than general teachings. I knew my argument is flawed because of the second sentence. And I'm still thinking up a better solution to it. It was a half baked response that needs a lot more thought than I have already applied.
