My 4x4 project - Earth - 07-18-2015 I am a prepper/survivalist and I enjoy the outdoors so having an off-road capable vehicle is important. My father decided to sell his 1998 Chevy Blazer LS 4x4 and I told him not to that I want it and he can have my car if I can have his Blazer. He agreed on it. All the Blazer needs is the transfer case encoder motor because she is stuck in 4hi and the switch is fine, the vacuum is fine so that leave it to the encoder motor. Other then that she started pissing gas by the tank which the tank was replaced with a new fuel pump and sending unit a year ago so I have to pin point that leak and then after all of that it should be good to go then I will focus on some off-road work. I am going to put a 2" lift on it, a LSD, do some water proofing and install a snorkel, add a solar panel on the roof, install a small battery bank, charge controller and inverter, a front winch and that's about it for now. I don't want to go too crazy because it needs to be road worthy. RE: My 4x4 project - mothered - 07-18-2015 The outdoors (camping, fishing etc) Is quite fun and rather relaxing. It breaks the monotony of being on the PC all day, by replacing It with a serene environment. Seems like a cool project. Is It already equipped with a tow bar, bulbar and spotlights? Good choice with the LSD. You'd need that diff with 4x4 driving. It will be getting a towing kit and LED off-road light bar. I was like WTF is a bullbar at first but now I know what you mean, I don't call them bullbars I call them push bars but stock it does not have it, but it will be getting one probably custom made because I cannot find one for blazers anywhere. And believe it or not being open differential it has never got stuck and its been off-road a lot in its life but an LSD is just a better choice, don't want to get stuck 5-10 miles in the woods. One of my freshmen roommates had a Blazer. It was a pretty dependable car and managed to carry back multiple drunks on the weekends. Plus, I have a hardon for Chevrolet. The 4.3 Vortec engines run a very long time if maintained, the transmissions 4L60E's are pretty reliable if maintained as well but have there issues sometimes. Of course its still a vehicle and things go wrong. The downside for sure is it only gets 13mpg. I don't care what anybody says GM made some of the best vehicles in the world but just like any other manufacturer they have bad ones in the bunch and they have there issues here and there. I don't care for newer cars though I like to stick below 2004. The fun part Is building It to your liking, then reap the rewards once It's finished. It's an exciting project that's for sure. Yea well its going to be about a year before I get it to the way I want it. Right now I am still fixing it, it may not seem like much of a job which it isn't but without spare money to buy parts to get it up and running I can't do anything right now. The fuel leak got worse from driving it and working on the 4x4 so now it does not get enough fuel pressure to stay running and right now I do not have any fuel line or pressure fittings to fix it. But every line is going to be replaced, fuel lines, vacuum lines, brake lines, etc are all going to get replaced eventually that way I know they are new and they will last. What good is a vehicle that will be used for outdoors, survival, etc if its got old lines that can give out any moment of being used. That is one of the major issues I see people doing with there "bug out vehicles" they add all these gadgets and out-door capable stuff but they forget to replace there for example fuel lines and then it is dead 5-10 miles in the woods. And another thing that is upsetting is they forget one of the major must-do's with an off-road vehicle and that is water proofing any major/important components and adding skid plates. Yes, If you're going to fix it, you must do It right the first time (which Is exactly what you're doing). At the end of the day, It's not your average vehicle to take you from point A to point B. It's a robust vehicle and must be built to accommodate It's purpose and remain that way.
