Steam threats - Master - 04-20-2015

I was contacted by someone (a bot) named Erüdo. He seemed legit at first, I play a csgo match with him, so I accepted his friend request. I saw Erüdo send me a message with a link to a file called Image_xxx.scr. I quickly looked up scams and such that can be seen on Steam, and I became aware of phishing, thanks to an article linked.

If I opened this file, the following tasks would have been performed:
  • Retrieves the current session ID of my Steam user account.
  • Gains access to my’s inventory / backpack.
  • Saves items onto an “offer list” for selling.
  • Displays an image in order to make me believe that what I actually opened is indeed an image file and not an actual application

I unfriend him and report it to Steam.

Sketchy. Will keep an eye out.

You actually downloaded and opened a file from somebody on Steam? Shake my head, that's probably the oldest trick in the e-book. Especially with those scr files. I accidentally got my boy @Chromium one of those bad boys one time. For some reason, bots add me every day. They tryna get me to go onto their links and what not.

There is also the try hards as you mentioned OP.

Keep an eye out.

I know right? I'm to the point to where I see a private profile try to add me and just decline it. I don't even add them and ask what's up.

I get these all of the time. Very annoying. Another annoying one is a bot that gets names from traders on csgolounge.com and adds them. It gets really annoying when I'm trying to do a legit trade.

I've never gotten anything like this before, but I'll keep my eye out...I still don't know why soo many people still fall for this crap, oh well, I guess we'll all be here watching the digital version of natural selection take its course.

Wow, good to know the exact mechanic of that scam.

They are coming up with great scams nowadays.

Glad they didn't get me!
