Which language to really dive into programming? - proton0s - 03-26-2015

Hey there,

I recently started to get into the basics of programming and read alot about many different programming languages (how they work, how / what for they were invented etc.).
By saying 'basics' i mean things like I know about variables, data types, if-else statements, what objects are, what Classes are, loops etc

Now i want to get deeper involved with programming, starting my own projects etc. and I am wondering what language to choose to really start.

Languages i read about are: C, C++, C#, Python, Java and Perl.

I read many suggestions to go for Python since it is super easy for starters and to 'get your work done'. Others said going for Python First might get me in trouble learning C later on, so they said go for C first and learning other languages would be easier.
Iam a bit confused now, which to choose, knowing the very basics of programming.

In General i want to go for application in general.
Probably C++ might be a good start?

Or better Java since its portable and more commonly used than V++?

Thanks in advance!

Python, definitely.

Yeah, start with python, get the hang of it, then you can freely move on to what you prefer!

If-else is just a small part of variable usage.

If this than that else this, evolves into if this but not this but sometimes that then this, but only if this isn't that, else this.

Python or Java are the biggest from what I've heard. They are also the hardest to learn for beginners. I do not really know if that's true, as I'm not much of a coder myself. From what I've heard and seen, it is best to start with a C language, unless you want to do web coding, then you would learn something like Python or JavaScript. JavaScript is basically the same as C++ with the code style (from what I've seen myself at least). It really depends on what you want to do with the code. I do not have much experience with any of the coding languages, so I don't know much, sorry.

If you want to head straight to applications, start with python and move to C++

I don't think you should worry about learning a Language... Figure out what you want to make and learn what you need to achieve that. Programming should be a means to an end in my opinion; syntax is ever-changing, it's just the concepts that remain the same.

the "beginning programming" course at my local community college teaches python. I learned a bit of python when I took that class but ultimately had to drop the class. Python is good stuff though, and can be a good place to learn. I also like what @Size is saying.
