Hey gang! It's your buddy here
I've been running on a PC that I assembled back in the spring of 2007.
I've got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30GHz Processor, with 4 gigs or ram, a most likely decent (for the time) mobo, and an NVidia GeForce 9600 in this bad-boy.
I think it's absolutely time I upgrade. It's been too long and the games coming out these days aren't able to play top settings (or anywhere near medium) anymore and I think it's about time to retire this hunk o' junk and upgrade.
Anyone have any suggestions for something I can build for cheap, while hitting benchmark for today? I intend on keeping my HDDs and case. I'll get a new power supply if needed. I'm running dual monitors, but one of the monitors is not HDMI capable--keep that in mind when looking at GFX cards.
The price range I'm tossing out there is around $800.

Have you heard of http://pcpartpicker.com? It's a really helpful site for building a PC. I'm currently using it to build my pc. In fact, my first order of parts just came in. It's very helpful for determining prices on components, and it automatically filters parts that aren't compatible with each other.

There is a Micro Center a few cities over from where I live that a number of friends have been recommending I go to, but I'm one of those special snowflakes that hates social interaction--or putting on pants.

With Cyber Monday and all the sales going on I bet you'll find some good deals on PC parts.

Should I go with an i7 or an i5? The i7 I know will run everything I want it to, but the i5 is tested and true... choices...

didn't know that site either.
Sounds really great for building a PC from scratch.
Wish I would've come about this earlier

I'm still waiting on my tax returns to build this behemoth, so I'm hoping that I get more than I was aiming to put into it and get a little extra scratch.
I'm trying to bench mark my computer to the game Evolve, if that helps any of you with the idea of what I want.

Take a look at the iMac, copy the components and change out the video card.
Also, you should sell me your old comp. Im really tired of this chromebook

Like @Losi said, pcpartpicker is a boss. I would definitely recommend it.
