HCLinux- A sneak preview - chmod - 08-30-2014

Hello [username],

I recently decided to try Arch Linux as an excuse to learn more about Linux in general especially the manual installation process. This got me thinking why not turn it into a little project I could share with others so I decided I would make a customised Arch install (that will eventually become a bootable iso). The main purpose of this would be a pentesting/programming focused distribution

The thoughts of everyone reading this Wrote:"But wait, don't we already have Kali and hundreds of other distros that do the same thing?"

-Why yes, yes we do and they will most likely be better but I'm doing it mainly for the experience. It's still in it's very early days, but decided to document it here with what I've done, what I want to do with it and maybe get some feedback from those of you who are interested.

This is where I'm at:
  • Base Arch system is installed and configured (only currently has a root account because reasons)
  • Some basic tools installed as well as a window manager, I chose XFCE for 2 reasons
    • 1) Because I like it
    • 2) It's lightweight so should run on shit hardware
  • VPN support added
  • Basic network tools installed
    • NetworkManager
    • nmap
  • Spent a little time on the UI (it looks awful right now I know)

What I want to do is have some more tools related to pentesting programming and reverse engineering so any suggestions are welcome, finish the UI with nicer icons updated wallpaper (any graphics guys reading this I would be more than happy to accept your help regarding this. With the permission of @Deque and the rest of the HC devs I would like to include as many of the official releases as possible.

Any other feedback would also be appreciated

inb4: You're wasting your time, I know but it's kinda fun

I chose Arch as it forces you to do things manually and also I don't have much experience with it so will be a nice project to learn more about it as well. Will probably mean initial progress will be slow though.

In my opinion, you want to include the tools that's great but many tools are win version, almost all the tools by Deque will be supported and tools by Solixious, since they made it with Java. Like PEiScan, MalDet, Solixia etc etc. etc., those are new tools but other than that the already published tools for Reversing engineering or Pentesting are very good.

For Programming stuffs and what things can be included or distributions and versions I can help you, hook me up on IRC or shoot me a PM (I will be available this evening). I can help you with Terminal Launcher bash Scripts or Creating Desktop launchers.

By the way its a great work you're doing. I was a failure when I tried to install Arch Linux for the first time Biggrin and then never tried again.

Kudos Smile

Agreed mate, It allows total customization depending on user.. well done on the progress for far

Thank you for the support. I understand that not all of the tools will be suitable so I will need to spend some time selecting which ones.

Regarding your offer with the programming side I will definitely be in touch, will be great to get input from you.

Arch is a pain to get working so don't feel bad took me a while to get it to install the first time, with all sorts of weird and wonderful errors.

Thanks again for the input I appreciate it.

Do you need a boot animation? I could show you my preview what I made with AE. Its very simple but I could upgrade it for you.

Besides really great project! I would like to participate but my knowlege isn't good enough yet to do back-end programming stuff.
