This needs to be shared - Inori - 08-20-2014 This has absolutely nothing to do with hacking but it should be said either way. I have had the privilege, no, the honour of working and climbing with Daren Bernier for the past 4 years. You may be asking "Who in blue fuck is Daren?" and to answer that I have this story. Four years ago, Daren showed up a first year staff at Arowhon with one thing nobody had seen on camp staff in years. Tattoos. It might not seem like a big deal but it's what they said, not the fact they were there. The first was obvious. All it said was Climb. It would make sense as he's been climbing for near 20 years and is probably the most dedicated to the sport I've ever met. The other tattoo is what got me thinking. It reads "I'll find strength in pain". A lyric from "the cave". Until 6 weeks ago, only staff knew what it meant. Then I was told the story. When Daren was in Elementary school, he was the go-to beat-up kid. Not unlike myself and surely not unlike some of you. It started off with the usual schoolyard bullying; stolen lunch money, idle threats, taunts, but it escalated. At 14, his first month of 9th grade, he was beat into a coma by some older kids who kew his past history of getting picked on. When he woke up, one week later, he could neither walk nor speak. Today, he's the strongest climber I know and he's capable of speaking not just English but French and bits of Mandarin. Daren Bernier is by far the most influential, funniest and the strongest (mentally and physically) person I've ever met. In terms of Role models and Idols, on my list, He's up there with Dave Grohl and Neil deGrasse Tyson. The reason I wrote this is because he's asked me to spread his story. He's inspired and empowered myself, my girlfriend (he's a big reason we're going out), and dozens of campers. I hope you all accept it, learn from it, and grow because of it. Spoiler:![]() RE: This needs to be shared - h3r0 - 08-20-2014 As a climber myself the discipline (Which I need to work on haha) and mental fortitude it takes are quite intense. To go from physical rehab to climbing is a very impressive feat. Great job Daren. Let me know when he hits the 5.14d haha RE: This needs to be shared - h3r0 - 08-20-2014 As a climber myself the discipline (Which I need to work on haha) and mental fortitude it takes are quite intense. If you ever meet Daren again, tell him that I think he's an amazing person. I'm really wondering how you can go back living your normal life after you have put someone to coma. I hope the kid feels really bad about himself. RE: This needs to be shared - RaccoonCity_mybb_import13707 - 08-20-2014 Wow. If you ever meet Daren again, tell him that I think he's an amazing person. RE: This needs to be shared - Reaper_mybb_import6988 - 08-21-2014 I wish there was more people like that in the world, that man truly is an inspiration to anyone who has struggled in the past. When you see him again please wish him all the best from me.
