Raspberry pi idea - RaccoonCity_mybb_import13707 - 08-02-2014

This is hard - but it would be so cool if it worked.

If I put a small camera on my raspberry pi, I could set up some scripts to take pictures every 10 seconds.

I was thinking putting an hot air balooon on the Raspbbery pi with camera and other stuff needed, and try to take it as high as possible to take pictures.

The only problem is that I need internet connection for it.
It would work if I was using satelite obviously, but the question is how you surf on satelite.

An another is how far up I can take it before it'll fall down.

If I was using a hot air balloon it wouldn't take much time before the fire would die and cause it to fall down.

An another idea is would to fill it with a gas lighter than air - this is where the science comes in handy.

The periodic table tells me I should use Hydrogen! Biggrin

Thought, it's probably not enough as it will not take it out in space as there's vaccum there and the hydrogen is heavier than vaccum obviously.

Anyone that can answer my problems? Biggrin

EDIT:

Actually there are people who has already done this.
Thought, they didn't get it in an orbit around earth - they used some kind of gas, and it bursted after a while.

Instead of using internet they had it very secured and they were able to find it and recover it using a GPS afterwards!

I have tried something similar.
I connected my raspberry pi to 3 helium balloons. The pi was equipped with a camera and a 32G SD CARD. I attached a 100m rope to the balloons so I could easily retrieve it. I didn't flew it into orbit though :p I can't find the images at the moment. I hope I backed them up somewhere.

That's also a good idea, using a rope.
Then you don't need to take the risk of anything breaking and you don't need e.g a GPS.

The thing is, 100 meter up in the sky isn't much at all.
But that kind of inspired me of doing the rope stuff from an even higher place. Biggrin

When your balloon gets high enough into the atmosphere basically it will fall not on the initial position but somewhere else so GPS is the first thing you'll have to make, 2nd it's not necessary to use internet, use an SD card instead and build a strong box for your device which can withstand the impact. I've seen a similar project by a group of people of Discovery Science, it was pretty cool and also they used an HD Cam :epic:

The last thing I would want is that the wind blows it out in the middle of the ocean. ;o;

Edit:
Let's say I use this techique then and it doesn't land in the middle of the ocean - how should I build it?

A box surrounded with pillows and bubblewrap? lol

Don't know if you've read it or not but here it is for anyone who's up for this project http://www.raspberrypi.org/pi-in-the-sky-2/

Thanks.

I've read some science stuff and when you drop something from a high height it'll reach its terminal velocity which means that it will not fall faster and it'll stop.
A skydiver was stopping at 240–290 km/h with head first, but I don't know about the raspberry really.

Who needs bubblewrap when you have Parachutes

You could use electromagnetic waves to transfer data.
You will need a radio transmitter and receiver which use the same frequency. Raspberry Pi will simply encode the binary data in electromagnetic waves and send it via transmitter. Your receiver will collect this data and send to your computer then your computer will decode it and view it as a picture.
There are several ways to convert data in electromagnetic waves.

I hope I could help
