Booting an OS off a mobile device. - xXfireball127Xx - 08-02-2014
I've always wondered if it would be possible to partition part of a phones storage off and flash a USB boot-able OS image to it. I figure it would be possible, I'll probably give it a shot on my old IPod 4th gen. Thought it would be a good way to hide a kali/backtrack/tails OS that one might use for their hacking purposes and not want exposed to prying eyes. You'd need an OS that can run on the architecture. Not just any old USB bootable OS can be used. You also need the access to partition and wipe the drive(usually means rooted)
So if you're talking about the iPod touch gen4 then it runs with an ARM processor and there is an ARM version of kali. SO in theory yes you can install Kali onto your iPod. You'll need to replace your bootloader also (quick google says there is iBoot for that but I'm not sure if that is completed) so that you can boot another OS.
That is the first step being able to boot another OS then you need to install it onto the drive which is another problem for the iPod. I highly doubt you can run an interactive installer so you're going to need to install it manually. Of course all this is just 'in theory' in practice I'm going to say no you probably cannot.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here, if we are then im just not following you. I'm not talking about booting kali on the ipod. Im just talking about using part of the ipod as a live boot disk for my pc.

oh lol, well that is different. The answer is no you can't the iPod isn't a bootable device and can't be made one afaik as it needs non-standard drivers.

If you have an Android device around you could always use DriveDroid to boot an OS such as Linux, I've used it to boot many things
and there is also a way to boot Windows (I haven't tested it) but could be quite fun trying it later.If you don't you should be able to get a cheap Android Phone off Amazon $30 - $50 would be best, root it, strip all the bloatware and install drivedroid and have atleast a 32GB sdcard and just download a few distro's for your all your hacking needs

No problem man, I've been using it for a various few distro's and it seems to work for UEFI boot as well so you just install it on a rooted phone and your good to go try to get an Android phone that is supported though that way makes things easier.
