c++ 3D Game Development! - BlueCat - 07-30-2014

I don't like any of the engines that are out atm.........or maybe because my laptop has not got a high enough GPU to to run the programs...

I was wondering, Could I just 3D Game development without an engine?

Also if you wanna go for 3D learn Maths, I mean lots of math regarding, vectors, physics of motion, differential equations. Matrix, Determinants etc etc. in Short get the hang of Linear Algebra and a lot of Graph Theory Concepts. You have to do all these if you don't wanna use Game Engines, if you change your mind and wanna ue a game engine then you still have to learn these but maybe not in great depth.

Search for more and you will get more.

Start with OpenGL. Its better to grab a book, I recommend OpenGL Superbible.

Well, You're an HC Dev, please search Google to find better answers first and then start a thread. You should have known this by now.

I'm not familiar with 3D game development in C++, but like Psycho already stated it will take lots of physics and maths to create realism. Why create something this complex from scratch when there are already perfect solutions that will safe you lots of time and grey hairs? Even a simple looking thing as destroying an object and make the particles fall in a realistic way is one tough cookie and that's just one of the many things that will cross your path.

The thing is Game Dev is a tough nut to crack. if you haven't started it from an early stage then you're likely to get great challenges ahead. A true Game Developer will have a lot of qualities like Mathematical thinking, Algorithmic Optimizations Concepts, Great Depth in Data Structures with greater emphasis on Graph Theory. It is actually very hard to cope with it later if you don't have ample amount of time to spend on learning it.

@BlueCat If you're very serious with GameDev then you can do it this way :-

1. Learn a single programming Languages very well. C++ or C# (Highly Recommended) or Python is recommended for Game Dev. I won't recommend Java, but still if you want then you can go for Java as well.

2. Learn about OpenGL, SDL, and a few more graphics or 3D rendering libraries, along with Photoshop and blender.

3. When you're almost confident about the coding and OpenGL. Start making 2D games. Watch Video Tutorials on Youtube. I would even recommend you to Signup on gemedev.net and read tutorials posted there.

4. Once you have made a few games in 2D and when you're almost satisfied. Start with 3D and there after try to read more and more and practice.

I hope I didn't scared the hell out of you Biggrin

Thanks. I came across Gamdev earlier today, but I wasn't sure so I decided to make a thread about it. I would really like to start from scratch as I do really feel the engines are very limited.

I am currently learning mainly c++ and I am getting use to it, So far things are going good! though, OpenGL, Isn't that the language they use for the Play Station 3?

RE: c++ 3D Game Development! - Deque - 07-30-2014

OpenGL is a graphics library with several languages bindings. It is not a programming language itself.
