CMS or starting from scratch? - katka18 - 07-21-2014

Hello guys,

Im making a survey for my website. I want to find out if there is still someone who writes websites from scratch or if you prefer CMS. I know that sometimes it depends and if you need to make an online store or if your client needs the website quickly, its better to use CMS. But sometimes its even better to work in a team and write it from scratch.

My friends who are developers prefer CMS in every single case. I dont think that they are real developers because they just customise something what is already done and ready for the customer.. and when I ask them about HTML, they dont know how to answer.. but thats only my opinion and I dont want to insult anyone Smile

So I decided to make the survey about it.

What do you prefer?

I prefer writing from scratch because when there is an error, I can find the mistake faster than in the CMS.

Smile

I totally agree with you. Most so called developers using cmses don't know anything, I've seen those kind of people come and go at my work. Last year around 10 of them, because the client wants some customised things and that's when they fall hard through the basket as they can't even write a simple program besides the common hello world.

Personally I only use a cms like wordpress when I need a website up and running quickly for a client. When I create a website for myself I always use one of my own cmses(made three so far, one is available for free).

That's a good question, i fear that the only answer i can give is that it depends on what you have to do. For example, if it's something really simple which doesn't have any parrticular requirements i'd use CMS, but that's a little more complex than that.

Anyway, if i have to make complex website, i always code it my self (or in group) as i can better pay attention to security details. One issue with CMS is that whenever a vulnerability is found, your website is vulnerable too and since there are many script kiddies that use google to find potential targets, your website is likely going to be damaged.

Why not create your own cms? It will save you lots of time and like you say, the key to a secure site is in your own hands.

That's what i do and the best solution. If the code you write is well modularized then reuse the written code is much easier. I didn't truly create my own CMS but i reuse the code i write, so that i just need minor tweaks, mostly about design!

When I started programming I only used pure PHP for handling my database. I wrote everything from scratch EVERYTIME. I learned a lot and I understood a lot of things. But then I got a developer position which required me to learn "Drupal".. I kicked and screamed but honestly I'm glad I did it. Using a CMS like Drupal (Joomla and wordpress are pretty close to garbage to me) has made me a quicker and better developer. My code is more industry compliant and adding features is super easy.

If you are building something completely custom maybe see if PHP is worth it. If not use a framework (Another reason to love Drupal is that it basically is a Framework with CMS abilities)..

I prefer to make one, as you said. Your example is also perfect. Maybe you could you use a CMS and delete it when your ''selfmaded from scratch CMS'' is done. It's an idea Tongue.

if I was you, I would make an CMS Smile

Depends who you work with/for...

I am not a CMS guy, and because of that I couldn't find a job ... most people want "fast over quality", which doesn't title me if you know what I mean.

Peace

Definitely from scratch, WHY? Because we get to learn the in-depth knowledge of a CMS and how it's made

Yes, if my customers need the website quickly I use only Wordpress as well.
But unfortunately, I am not a designer so the visual part of the site takes me the longest time.. heh

Anyway, thank you for your opinions Smile

I know what you mean. When I was searching for my first IT job, companies always wanted me to use only Wordpress or any other CMS. So I always rejected their offers... But I had to learn how to work with it cause there was no other way.. Sad
