How To Boot Linux On VirtualBox[VM] - BlueCat - 07-02-2014

Hello, Hack Community and today I am going to guide you through how to boot Linux up on a Virtual Machine. First of all we need to know what one is really. A Virtual Machine is basically software/program with aspects of any other physical computer/laptop which can successfully run OS(Operating Systems). Now, Let's get cracking on with how to actually run the linux on one. You're going to want to download a program called Virtual Box, As you may now have figured, This is the virtual machine we are going to use to run Linux.(Download link is at the bottom of the post). We are also going to be installing ubuntu(Also at the bottom of the post).

Once, These two have been downloaded, I want you to open Virtual Box. This is how it will look like when you have opened it.

You're going to want to locate to New in the top left. Once clicked you will get an installation wizard.

Click next and you shall see this.

Right beside name, Call it what-ever you want it does not matter at all. For me, I am going to be calling it Bluecat. Locate to the Operating Systems and change it to Linux. and under version change it to ubuntu. Like the following picture below.

if done correctly, Proceed and click Next. You will see this type of screen.

Now for me, I leave this the same and proceed, so don't change anything and proceed by clicking Next. You will now see this image.

Choose create new hard disc if it was not automatically set to that. Proceed to next step and once again another installation wizard pops up.

Click Next and you will see this.

Click Fixed-Sized Storage if it was not automatically set to that. then proceed to next step. This is what it looks like now.

Select where you want to store the data and files. and for selecting the hard disk for the virtual machine, I am going to leave it the same, You can change however. Again proceed

Click Finish. now your Virtual machine will start to be created. as below.

wait for it to finish. Now it will close and you will see your virtual computer on the left hand side.

Now locate to settings. You will see this.

Locate to storage and this will come up.

On the left hand side you see a yellow folder click on it and search for your download Linux iso. and click on it. then once its done, click ok and on the left side double click on our computer name and linux should boot up.

I think that this is not able to happen, but you can give it a shot going to Network tab and choosing the Bridged interface.

The work is saved, and yes you can retrieve it the next time you boot on it.

On Topic : well the mistake here (at least for me) is probably that you mentioned/preffered only Ubuntu, for me Ubuntu should not even be mentioned... (but of course this is my opinion).

Well done nice pic tutorial man.

I don't see why I Used Ubuntu, as it's terrible. but it was just an example I guess. You can use any dist you please to use. Just make sure you load the iso before starting it up.

Hahaha, I maybe have installed like 100-200 oses on VM man relax... also the last comment I made for ubuntu was both serious(I hate Cannonical they are suckers to me) and funny ( I knew was example just wanted to push it a little lol).

Again great job its excelent for beginners on VB usage.
Cheers!
