Best free stuff? - Inori - 06-05-2014

I have the basics and a few extras (gimp, code::blocks, blender) and I'm looking for some other awesomeness. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Depends what you want to do:

XChat-IRC
Thunderbird-email
VLC-media player
ffmpeg-converting audio/video files
audacity-converting audio
k3b- burning CD's/DVD's

and many other options depending on what you want to do.

Vim or Emacs, if you are a hardcore programmer

Seriously, it depends on what you need. If you want just a list of free stuffs, you can simply visit the Free Software Directory on FSF.

Also, do you mean "free as in freedom" or just software you don't have to pay for?
In the first case, please note that software like Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird are not totally free (Iceweasel and Icedove are the completely free alternatives).
Last note: ffmpeg is deprecated, and will be replaced by AVConv.

Since you haven't specifically said what are you looking for, I will post here some software I'm using in my everyday work on my Linux machine:
  • Geany - simple yet powerful text editor and IDE, there are many plugins and themes available
  • Pidgin - powerful and well supported IM client (can work with Facebook and similar services), if you're going to use it be sure to check options for securing your messages
  • Decibel Audio Player - simple music player written in Python, fast and lightweight, supports libraries, folders, equalizer, ID3 tags...
  • Transmission - also simple BitTorrent client
  • GIMP - tool for image manipulation, really powerful, you can do anything you want with some practice
  • Evince PDF viewer - does what the name says
  • Xfburn - tool for burning files onto CD/DVD, supports ISO images

I hope this list will help you somehow Smile
