best development/build/version? - Inori - 05-28-2014

Since my computer is basically wiped and I have a nearly clean start ahead of me, I've been thinking about installing Linux for a while. Main things I'd be doing are gaming, graphics, pentests, and school work (probably in that order). So my question is: What version (or build or whatever it is) should I get?

Linux isn't great for gaming (although support is rising)

Since you will mostly be using the system for daily tasks I wouldn't recommend a pen testing distribution (the term for 'version') as they are not really suited for this or Linux beginners in general IMO.

Finally as for recommendations, there's a few I'll suggest and as Linux can be booted from DVD/USB you should try all of them:

Linux Mint
Ubuntu (or variants thereof)

Slightly more advanced but still viable would be:
Debian
Fedora (My distro of choice)

Thanks for the list! That's pretty cool with the disc boots, too. Very retro Tongue

It's a sort of 'try before you buy' you can test features and hardware compatibility before making any changes to your HDD.
