Actually it's probably not that devastating for the authors. I mean it's incompetent, yes, but most people wouldn't know that the key was stored there, or where to look for it, or even what to do if they found it. It's not gonna be a success like CryptoLocker, because in that case even experts had no choice but to pay if they wanted their files, but still they could do pretty well against ordinary users.
