Dyslexia And Programming - sliped_disk - 12-03-2013

Hello,
I would like to ask if anybody on the forum has dyslexia and how they cope with programming?
I have mild dyslexia myself but find that i grasp things very quickly. I read a book recently called The Dyslexic Advantage which as the title might suggest emphasizes some of the benefits that a dyslexic mind has over a "normal mind".

The book went into detail about the type of jobs/subjects that a person with dyslexia might be attracted to. Some examples of occupations would be:
  • Engineer
  • Actor
  • CEO of a company
  • Entrepreneur
  • Inventor
  • Artist
  • Software Engineer

The list does go on but what you may notice from this hand full of occupations is that they all require a degree of imagination. Computer specialists are mentioned many times in this book especially in areas like networking, program and system architecture, and graphics. Personally i have always had an understanding of computers, they are like little worlds that i can get sucked into, letters and number are like bricks, networks are like tunnels, and unwanted viruses are like little Justin Beibers.

As i read on through the book i started to realize that this book was describing my entire life.
I would get bored of school, when the teacher explained something i would of already of gotten the gist of what they were saying. For them to then go ahead and write it on the board over and over just made me lose interest. I was called lazy, more like bored!

I now know the techniques in which i learn most effectively, so now i can put them into action.
I would recommend this this book to anyone that has dyslexia and even if you don't it is a great read.

What are your experiences with this subject?

If there is ironically any spelling mistakes let me know.

I know one guy who has dyslexia(though I'm not sure how bad is it) but is a one damn great programmer. He said that only reading is tough part but if he can do some exercises while reading/learning something, it helps him a lot.

You aren't alone. Most of the time Dyslexia is an abnormality that is showed up in kids (8-12 yrs) but the fact is its more widespread and may latter affect any person but in different ways. What different ways if you ask then I will say that its a selective disorder when you have grown up. It disables or makes you week in certain fields however important and you not think that its anything of importance.

Yes I have recently developed this syndrome. I forgot almost everything names, spellings, I sometimes write the same word in two or three different ways as I get confusd and I think all of them are correct. I forget faces, I forget my birthday, my friends name, college hours and a lot of things that are to be remembered everyday and for general works. I don't understand the general sorts of things that happen around and everything else other than my studies disturbs me.

Still with these difficulties I don't care for thse because I am alive because I love Programming, I love to code and I love computer science. Its the only reason which gives me such motivation that I live everyday with a new zeal to understand and learn new concepts however difficult. I call this selective dyslexia. I don't give a fuck to anything else as it is all crap and butthead things. Well if you focus only on one subject solely then your dyslexia won't affect you a bit,

Why do you think to do things the way others do, try doing it in your way ? I live my life everyday as if I am to develop a new algorithm everyday. Think differently, look in all the other possibilities.

Being a programmer when someone says "this cannot be done this way" then I defintely will try to do it that way as I believe that everythings is possible if you give a careful thought. At present I decide my actions the way a computer would think, possibly, finding all the possibilites but doing whats best. Its more like Flloyd warshalls algorithm to find all pairs shortest path, but follow the path that is best suited.

Now let me tell you something important which will help you grow your skills in programming. Just do one thing, find an inspiration in programming. Find someone who inspires you, whom you want them to know you and your skill set and acknoeledge you, maybe its like you wanna attract them. It doesn't matters whether they know you or you know them or not. But its very important for you to believe in your belief and have faith upon them. Those people will give you an enormous amount of mental support that your brain will work hard to study and grab new concepts. You might say that it becomes a lust for you as you wanna become like them or as good as they are. But you'll see that undoubtedly you have come across a long path. If possible find some girl as they give you an extra reason and an extra support and this usually helps a lot in your study, (be careful never love them, they are human heart hackers and they are blackhats they will break you into pieces if you love them, So take extra cautions). If you ask how it works then its simple, when you find an inspiration with verygood programming abilites you will try to interact with them and that would possible and you would be free to interact with them better when you know about the subject matter so that you can discuss with them better. This lust for communication with them freely will give you can extra interest in programming and you might study hard very hard to improve yourself.

In my case I did the same, I have an inspiration and I strive to work hard everyday to become better than them, it has affected me in different ways as I try give my 100% in one subject but I fucking dont care. As long as I am enjoying CS I will live and I strive to be as good as them who inspire me. When someon became my inpiration, I stopped going to college (maybe once in a week), then I gave long hours to study anf theory. Learning each concepts, every example, every piece of worksheets. But it wasn't enough as It would take lot of time. Then I began to cut my sleep hours from 6 hrs to 3 hrs, in those hours I gave my emphasis on practical stuffs and practising programming exercises. Finally, I did became better. After all the hardwork, one day I was finally appreciated by someone who is my inspiration. I still remember that day. BUt listen never stop working hard, fuck dyslexia, if dyspexia comes in your way fuck it until it bleeds, then move on learning again and try to be near to perfection, but not being perfect as being perfect is boring.

Its as simple as that.

"I am a Programmer, I have an adventourous life".
