How-To: IRC - The Real Slim Shady - 09-29-2013 There are a ton of tutorials on how to use/connect on IRC. however they pretty much fail to provide one piece of very important information. Do: Join. make a comment, sit and wait. We call this idling. It can take 3-5-10 minutes some times more until someone notices your comment. You can often speed this up by mentioning their name. Dont: Join, ask if anyone is there, and then leave 40 seconds later. I pretty much guarantee you that you will never get a response, especially on smaller channels. You have just wasted the minute and a half of your life you can never get back by leaving so quickly. If you wait and idle, you might actually put the irc server to use and talk with people

RE: How-To: IRC - Slarek - 09-29-2013 It's sad that there are not too much traffic on the IRC channel. Could be more, but it's good that there are few very active users so you can usually get some discussion going on. RE: How-To: IRC - Anima Templi - 09-29-2013 That's right, there are not a lot of members on the channel so far and that has probably something to do with what @Geoff described. They join, make one message and then leave in 40 seconds because they think no one is really here to talk with them. The thing is, we don't sit and stare at the IRC channel 24/7. We normally do something else at the same time like; programming, studying, reading, listening to music etc. We check by at a regular basis or when out name is mentioned (you do that by simply typing the name we use on the IRC channel in the message field). But if you see me online and you mention me I will promise you that I will answer in a second.
